In Vietnamese Buddhist tradition, the La Hán (Arhats) occupy an important place within pagodas, where they are often arranged on either side of the main altar. Unlike the idealised and serene representations of the Buddha, figures of ascetics and Arhats allowed sculptors considerable freedom of expression: their faces are highly individualised, sometimes humorous, solemn, or deeply marked by age and meditation.

The figure is depicted seated with the left leg raised, the knee embraced by both hands clasped together, upon which the chin rests. This compact, introspective posture is characteristic of representations of La Hán in Vietnamese and Chinese Buddhist art. It conveys intense concentration, renunciation of material possessions and the mortification of the body in favour of spiritual cultivation.

The bald head and highly expressive features are distinguished by prominent cheekbones, elongated earlobes and an inward-looking, almost closed gaze. The skeletal structure of the back and shoulders remains visible beneath the fluid folds of the robe, further emphasising the ascetic nature of the figure.

Condition:
The sculpture is entirely covered with a traditional reddish-brown lacquer preparation over which a warm-toned metallic leaf gilding has been applied. The surface displays highly attractive natural wear from age and devotional use, revealing the darker lacquer ground beneath the remaining areas of metallic leaf.

The figure sits upon a carved lotus-corolla base resting on a small circular pedestal. The underside reveals the untreated core of the wood, with visible traces of carving tools. The statuette was probably originally placed within a niche or incorporated into a larger altar ensemble alongside other figures.
