Elegant covered stoneware jar produced at the Sawankhalok kilns, one of the major ceramic production centres of the Sukhothai Kingdom, in present-day Thailand, between the 14th and 16th centuries.

Of globular form, the jar features a generously rounded shoulder, a short neck and a slightly raised ring foot. It retains its conical lid with a knob finial, the surface decorated with a radiating pattern of stylised petals.

The decoration, painted in a dark iron-based pigment beneath a translucent glaze with ivory and bluish-grey tones, unfolds freely across the body. It consists of a network of sinuous branches punctuated by leaves and small stylised flowers, evoking vegetation in motion. This naturalistic composition, characterised by the spontaneity of the brushwork and the rhythmic repetition of the motifs, belongs to the decorative repertoire of Sawankhalok underglaze-painted ceramics.

The shoulder and lower part of the body are emphasised by several registers of concentric lines, creating a graphic framework that balances the floral composition. The lid follows the same decorative scheme with a radial frieze, while subtle bluish tones appear in certain areas of the glaze.

The surface displays an extensive network of fine crackling, accompanied by variations in colour ranging from creamy white to lightly amber-toned beige. These characteristics lend the piece remarkable visual depth and reflect both the technical particularities of the firing process and the natural ageing of the glaze.

The ring foot, largely left unglazed, reveals a pale clay body characteristic of regional production.

The Sawankhalok kilns, established particularly in the Si Satchanalai region, underwent considerable development during the Sukhothai Kingdom and the early centuries of the Ayutthaya period. Their wares, especially valued for the quality of their stoneware bodies and underglaze-painted decoration, were widely exported through the maritime trading networks of Southeast Asia.

Condition: UV CHECKED. Very good condition. Extensive overall glaze crackling, variations in the glaze and visible signs of age. Lid present. A few minor chips to the rim.
