This bronze statuette depicts the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, seated in meditation, with his legs crossed and the right leg resting upon the left. His hands rest in his lap, palms facing upward, one upon the other, signifying the deep concentration that precedes Enlightenment.
 
The work belongs to a provincial or ethnic tradition, distinguished from the court art of Luang Prabang by its pronounced stylisation and more rustic execution. The face displays characteristic features, with closed almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, and full lips forming a serene smile. The ears are elongated, extending toward the shoulders, symbolising wisdom and the renunciation of his princely life. The hair is rendered as large globular curls.
 
The ushnisha (the cranial protuberance symbolising supreme wisdom) is surmounted by an unusually long and exceptionally tall flame, smooth and almost architectural in form, widening toward the top. The Buddha wears a monastic robe, the upper section over the left shoulder forming a flat, stylised band extending down to the waist.
 
The figure rests upon an openwork throne, pierced at the sides and back, a type of base characteristic of Southeast Asian bronzes. The base, like the body, displays extensive verdigris patination, evidence of prolonged burial. The underside reveals the hollow-cast construction of the bronze.
 
With its pronounced ethnic features and more artisanal execution, this bronze illustrates the spread of Buddhism beyond urban elites. It embodies popular devotion and a local interpretation of established iconographic conventions. The exaggerated and unusual height of the flame is a feature frequently encountered in provincial Laotian art, sometimes developed almost to the point of abstraction, reinforcing the distinctive visual identity of the region.
 
Condition: Exceptional chocolate-brown patina, with traces of oxidation and mineralisation.
