This nearly circular tsuba is decorated with an elegant sukashi (openwork) design conceived in a naturalistic and ornamental spirit. Broad veined leaves unfold around the nakago-ana, accompanied by a small blossoming flower and gracefully curving stems that animate the entire composition. Delicate gold inlays, applied as fine linear highlights and decorative scrolls, accentuate selected elements of the design and enrich the overall visual effect.

The ironwork, both restrained and expressive, combines openwork carving, subtle engraving, and discreet modeling in a harmonious decorative composition characteristic of the Shōami school. Highly regarded for the elegance of its designs, rhythmic compositions, and remarkable ornamental freedom, the Shōami tradition is well represented in this piece. The fluid treatment of the vegetal motifs, the irregular outer rim, and the graceful movement of the design perfectly reflect this aesthetic, in which stylization is balanced by refinement and poetic sensitivity.

The deep, even dark brown patina of the iron enhances the graphic quality of the composition and the subtle interplay between solid forms, open spaces, and the remaining traces of gold inlay. The overall impression is one of lightness and elegance, characteristic of finely crafted vegetal tsuba from the late Edo period.

Condition: Beautiful old patina with expected wear and handling marks. Minor losses and rubbing to the gold inlays, light surface irregularities, and age-related wear consistent with the period. Overall, well preserved.
