Important five-panel Tantric ritual crown, known as a Crown of the Five Buddhas, worn in Tibetan Buddhism during certain initiations, consecrations and ritual practices.
The five petal-shaped panels symbolically represent the Five Transcendental Buddhas, associated with the five directions and the five Buddha families: Vairocana, Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitabha and Amoghasiddhi. Each is represented here in the form of a painted deity, positioned at the centre of an elaborate architectural composition of scrolling motifs and gilded relief decoration.
Beneath each deity are two red circular reserves decorated with gilded zoomorphic figures, apparently stylised lions, particularly visible beneath the deity on the central panel. The reverse of each of the five panels bears a ritual symbol painted in gold at its centre, forming a complementary iconographic programme to the five deities depicted on the front.
Within the context of Tantric initiation, such a crown is not merely a ceremonial ornament. Its bestowal and ritual wearing symbolically participate in the transformation of the five poisons, or disturbing mental states—ignorance, anger, pride, desire and jealousy—into the five forms of enlightened wisdom. The practitioner is thus invited to temporarily relinquish ordinary identity and visualise themselves in the purified form of the meditational deity.
The crown thereby becomes a visible manifestation of this ritual transformation. The five elements of ordinary experience are transmuted into enlightened qualities embodied by the Five Buddhas.
