In Nepal, the figure of Ganesha occupies a central role in both the Hindu pantheon and Tantric Buddhism (Vajrayana). In the Nepalese tradition, Ganesha is not only the remover of obstacles (Vighnaharta), but also assumes wrathful or dynamic forms, such as Nritya Ganesha (the Dancing Ganesha) or Maharakta Ganesha (the Red Tantric Ganapati).
This statuette reflects the traditional expertise of the Newar artisans of the Kathmandu Valley, renowned for their fine lost-wax casting and their dynamic rendering of bodily movement and adornment.
 
The sculpture depicts the elephant-headed deity, Ganesha, standing in a highly dynamic warrior posture. His right foot rests upon his traditional vehicle (vahana), the rat (mushika), expressively sculpted at the base of the composition.
 
Endowed with four arms, the deity holds in his secondary hands an elephant goad (ankusha), representing discipline, the removal of obstacles, and control over the senses. On the other hand, he holds an axe (parashu). His main left hand holds sweets (modaka), toward which his trunk delicately curls to scoop up a delicacy. His lower right hand reaches down toward the rat holds a radish (Moolaka), the sacred food cherished by the divinity, as well as the power to uproot material desires and the abundance/fertility of the earth.
 
The god is crowned with an imposing floral tiara surmounted by a fan-shaped crest typical of Nepalese statuary, and he's adorned with necklaces, bracelets, and the sacred thread.
 
The figure stands on a semicircular base bordered by a row of elegantly chased lotus petals. The reverse reveals simplified modeling with a back attachment for an aureole, now missing. 
 
Condition Report
Very good overall condition. The dark chocolate bronze patina exhibits fine wear from age and handling, revealing golden undertones beneath and remnants of ritual powders within the incisions. The structure is complete and stable.
