Under the Qing Dynasty, popular polychrome wood sculpture experienced a major flourish throughout provincial China. Created for domestic altars, guild shrines, or local temples, these effigies embody the syncretic Chinese pantheon blending Buddhism, Daoism, and the cults of ancestors or deified heroes. Carved from a single block of wood, these works were traditionally consecrated during a ritual (kai guang) in which small relics, prayers, or scrolls were inserted into a sealed cavity at the back of the statue to endow it with a spiritual presence.
 
This polychrome and gilded wood sculpture depicts a military dignitary or protective deity (such as Guan Yu, Guandi, or one of the Daoist Heavenly Marshals) standing in a dynamic and dignified martial posture.
 
The figure wears richly ornamented battle armor featuring raised scale patterns, draped beneath a general's heavy cloak secured by a breastplate and a ceremonial buckle belt. His right arm is raised with a clenched hand that originally held a weapon (likely a spear, mace, or halberd, now missing), while his left arm is bent forward. The expressive face, crowned with a general's helmet adorned with lateral plumes, features wide-open eyes with a fierce gaze, a prominent nose, and a long, triple-parted beard tinted red, a traditional symbol of power and loyalty. The figure stands on a solid cylindrical base carved from the same block of wood.
 
Condition Report:
The work is in authentic condition, reflecting its age and ritual devotion. The sculpture retains a significant portion of its original gold leaf as well as its red and black polychromy. Natural wear to the lacquer, craquelure, and minor losses to protruding elements are present. On the reverse, the ritual consecration cavity (zang shen kong) is open and emptied of its original offerings. The base reveals ancient, patinated wood that remains sound and stable. Minor chips, breaks, and cracks.
