This carved stone head represents a dignitary, an official figure, or possibly a deity from a Taoist temple, identified by its elaborate ceremonial headdress. The sculpture conveys a serene and gentle expression, characteristic of Buddhist and Taoist art of the middle and late Ming period. The elongated, half-closed eyes and full lips forming a subtle smile evoke an atmosphere of calm dignity.
 
The figure wears an ornate crown decorated with stylized geometric and floral motifs. At the front, two rectangular plaques rise above the main headband, framing a central circular or lobed ornament, a feature associated with high-ranking religious or ceremonial headgear.
 
The sculpture retains significant traces of its original polychrome decoration and gilding, despite the heavily weathered surface. A white preparatory ground remains visible beneath the dominant red pigment covering the face. The headdress preserves more varied remnants of its original decoration, including green and blue pigments, together with fragments of gold leaf still adhering to the frontal band and ornamental details, testifying to the sculpture's former splendor.
 
Condition: Carved from a soft variety of sandstone, the sculpture displays surface erosion that has softened the facial features, particularly the nose. The breaks at the neck and the back of the headdress remain visible, indicating that the head originally belonged to a larger statue. It is mounted on a modern minimalist black metal display stand, bringing the overall height to 22 cm. A modern hole has been drilled at the base of the neck to accommodate the mounting rod. The stand shown in the photographs is for display purposes only; the sculpture will be supplied with a slimmer display stand.
 
This piece is a fine and evocative example of Ming dynasty polychrome stone sculpture, preserving valuable evidence of the richly colored pigments and gilding that originally adorned religious images.
