An important, exceptional, and rare bronze parade bell intended for an elephant, a remarkable testimony to Khmer metalworking during the Bayon period.
 
The body of the bell displays a particularly elaborate construction, arranged in several superimposed registers separated by broad circular collars. The slightly domed upper section is articulated by a succession of radiating lanceolate motifs, forming a decorative crown that gives the whole an appearance at once architectural and ceremonial.
 
The lower section is the most spectacular element. It is extensively openworked and framed by powerful symmetrical vegetal scrolls, whose curled extremities surround a central pendant motif. These openings allowed the sound produced by the internal clapper to resonate freely. 
 
At the top rises a robust tubular fitting forming the original suspension system. The bell would have been attached to the animal’s harness so that its movements produced a rhythmic sound during ceremonial processions.
 
In the Angkorian world, the elephant occupied a major position as royal mount, war animal, and symbol of sovereign power. Richly caparisoned elephants took part in court processions and public displays of authority. The celebrated reliefs of the Bayon provide exceptional evidence in this respect for the presence of elephants in the military and ceremonial life of the Khmer Empire.
The quality of the casting, the monumentality of the composition, and above all the vigorous treatment of the vegetal ornament place this bell within the decorative vocabulary developed during the Bayon period.
 
Through its dimensions, the sophistication of its decoration, and its function in connection with elephant ceremonial, this work constitutes a rare testimony to material culture and courtly display in the Khmer Empire at the height of the Angkorian period.
 
Condition: The surface retains a rich dark green archaeological patina, nuanced with brown and punctuated by mineral malachite, cuprite and azurite.
Overall in good condition. Wear consistent with the age and function of the object.
