This circular cast bronze mirror is characteristic of the refined yet robust metalwork produced during the Bayon period of the Khmer Empire. It features a broad raised rim, approximately one centimetre thick, creating a shallow recessed central field. The reverse is decorated with finely incised concentric moulded circles in low relief, emphasizing the perfect circular form of the object while providing a subtle architectural structure to its surface. Much of this side remains covered by substantial original sandy and earthen concretions, firmly bonded to the ancient patina.
 
The reflecting face is gently convex and was originally polished to a very high finish, producing a highly reflective surface. Today it displays a dark, smooth patina with almost vitreous areas, beautifully contrasted by green cuprous oxidation (verdigris) around the outer edge.
 
Within the Khmer Empire, bronze mirrors were prestigious objects closely associated with the royal court and ceremonial practices. Beyond their practical use for personal grooming among members of the aristocracy, they carried profound symbolic and religious significance. Mirrors embodied spiritual clarity, captured divine light, and were employed by Buddhist and Brahmanical clergy to reflect the images of deities and to dispel negative influences during ritual ceremonies. The restrained elegance of this example highlights the exceptional technical expertise of Khmer bronze casters, particularly in their careful control of bronze alloys—often enriched with tin to produce a lighter-coloured metal and enhance its reflective qualities.
 
Condition report:
The mirror is in excellent archaeological condition. Its structural integrity has been fully preserved, with no cracks or significant losses. The contrasting surfaces, one retaining its original earthen burial concretions and the other displaying a smooth, deeply mineralized patina, provide a striking visual record of its long burial and exceptional state of preservation.
