This bronze statue depicts the Buddha standing or seated (depending on the exact posture) in the Abhaya Mudrā — a gesture symbolizing fearlessness, protection, and blessing. In this mudrā, with hands raised and palms facing outward, the Buddha embodies serenity and his calming power in the face of adversity.
The face, finely crafted, conveys profound calm, with a slight smile characteristic of Ayutthaya art at its peak. The features are well-balanced, the half-closed eyes reflect inward meditation, and the stylized hair is typical of the period. The finely sculpted monastic robe, clinging to the body in soft folds, emphasizes the figure’s verticality and elegance.
The Buddha rests on a tiered throne, an emblem of his spiritual dignity. The piece retains a beautiful patina, punctuated by remnants of red and black lacquer and traces of gilding, hinting at the richness of its original appearance. However, there are a few losses and breaks, most notably the absence of the ushnisha flame, traditionally present at the top of the head to symbolize enlightenment.
This work is a fine example of late Ayutthaya religious statuary, combining devotion, solemnity, and formal refinement.
