This imposing figure of the Buddha, cast in bronze in the 18th century during the Ayutthaya Kingdom period, depicts him standing with his right hand raised in the Abhaya Mudrā — a gesture symbolizing fearlessness, protection, and benevolence. This mudrā, often associated with the Buddha’s compassion for all beings, here conveys a majestic sense of peace, enhanced by the verticality of the figure.
The Buddha stands on a pyramidal base throne, a symbol of stability and spiritual elevation. The bronze is covered with lacquer and gilding, parts of which have flaked off, revealing the original metal surface underneath — remarkably well preserved.
On the back, the sculpture retains a mounting ring, a remnant of the device that once supported a sacred parasol, a ritual accessory denoting the sacred and royal nature of the figure.
The finely engraved monastic robe clings gracefully to the body, following the aesthetic canons of late Ayutthaya art, while the serene face, with its balanced features and half-closed eyes, expresses self-mastery and spiritual enlightenment.
